BREAKING: Chelsea have agreed a new six-year contract with Levi Colwill. The deal has yet to be signed but is now in place and commits the 20-year-old center-back to Stamford Bridge until at least 2029. Mauricio Pochettino spoke to Colwill, since day 1 he made it clear he was a top center back for present and future.
Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart insisted he was not for sale; they were working on that for months.
Levi Colwill joins Reece James as the powerful counter example that Bohley and Clearlake can hold up: that the very best academy products will always have a first team pathway and that every reasonable measure will be taken to ensure they feel appropriately valued and important.
Colwill returned to Chelsea this summer following a successful loan spell last season at Brighton & Hove Albion, who have the defender as their top summer transfer target.
OFFICIAL: Chelsea is delighted to announce Levi Colwill has signed a new six-year contract, with an option for a further year, for a total of seven years.
Levi Colwill: “It’s always been an easy decision. As I’ve grown up, all I’ve known is #Chelsea. I’ve spoken with the manager, and he’s given me reassurance, that trust I needed. He’s spoken with me not just as a player but a person. It’s made a big difference.”
“I never thought I could become what I have today, through all the hard work. There is no better feeling. So, it has always been an easy decision. I have grown up, and all I have known is Chelsea.”
Colwill: “You know, especially working with Thiago Silva, one of the best defenders in the World, I think I can learn so much from him, hopefully I can pick up little tricks and be there to ask him questions when I need things”
🗣️ Levi Colwill on Mauricio Pochettino:
“He pushes us hard, makes sure we do run, but also makes sure we do everything correctly and professional. That is the standards we need at #Chelsea, as one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
🗣️ Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley said: ‘Levi is an outstanding player who has risen to every challenge in his career so far. We are thrilled he will remain at Chelsea for years to come.
‘His journey from academy to first team is testament to his talent, dedication, and determination. Everyone at the club is now looking forward to watching him thrive at Stamford Bridge in the seasons ahead.’
Though Colwill made only 17 Premier league appearances for Brighton last season, he emerged as a key player under Roberto De Zerbi in the south-coast side’s run-in as they secured a sixth-place finish. His good form was rewarded with a call-up to training with the England senior side ahead of the June Euro 2024 qualifiers, before he joined his age-group team-mates. Colwill previously spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Huddersfield Town, who were beaten by Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final. Colwill will have competition for places in the Chelsea defense during the 2023-24 season, with Benoit Badiashile a like-for-like left-footed center-back option, as well as Thiago Silva and Trevor Chalobah. The west London side have also agreed a deal to sign Axel Disasi from Monaco, while Wesley Fofana had surgery earlier this summer after sustaining an ACL injury in pre-season training.
Colwill will know he has to earn a place in the Chelsea side like anybody else, but he is well within his rights to want some questions answered about how the club plan to use him. Financial reward is not the main motivation; the focus is on gaining enough game time to continue his progress and momentum. He has been at Chelsea since joining the under-9s and is clearly a rising star of the game. The center-back has just helped England win the under 21 European championship for the first time since 1984. When you also factor in how he finished the campaign on loan at Brighton as they secured sixth place in the Premier league, plus being called up to train with the senior England squad last month, the trajectory of his career is rapidly on the up. Chelsea can ill afford a repeat of the Mason Mount transfer saga.
